When was the last time that you read a book? If you're like most people, you've likely read a book fairly recently. One thing that most of us do not realize is that books have been around us and responsible for many things in our lives. When we're very young we were able to use books to relax and to let our imaginations fly. As we grew older books were a source of knowledge. And as adults we use books to find information in and to relax with. One type of book that gets little credit in history, but that has been very important, are books by African American authors.
African American authors had to struggle much more than most other authors to get their work read and understood. Fortunately they had a little help along the way. For instance, the NAACP, or National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was set up to help people who were black to get ahead in their chosen careers. When it came to black authors, this group of amazing individuals were able to help provide exposure that was very helpful in getting their work read.
The help continued during the 1920's, when the Harlem Renaissance occurred. It was during this time when African American literature that had been written over a hundred years ago came to light and was appreciated, and when new African American authors started to embrace their passion and to put their words down on paper.
But one of the most influential things that helped to get African American literature in the spotlight were African American book clubs. African American book clubs were created in order to get the work of black authors directly to the homes of people who wanted to read them. When you sign up with an African American book club, you are able to select from many black authors, such as the likes of Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Alexander Miles, Maya Angelou, and many more. These works have helped to shape the world into what it is today.
Once you've selected your book or poem, the African American book club will then send it to your doorstep, allowing you to enjoy reading fine African American literature without having to go anywhere to get it. It is thanks to organizations like the NAACP and African American book clubs that we are still able to enjoy amazing works by black authors.
